Picture-perfect looks might have seenArmando Cabralmodel for fashion’s biggest names, but an eye for good design and an entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch his own eponymous men’s footwear label in 2008, where he continues to see each and every shoe down to its very last stitch. Just before travel plans got put on pause earlier this year, we photographed Armando in our first collection in Marrakech, Morocco, and asked the globe-trotting model to tell us the secrets he’s learnt travelling the world.

What’s your go-to travel outfit?

I love being comfortable on flights. When I travel, I normally like to wear an easy, cropped trouser, T-shirt and a sweater. SMR Days’ cotton drawstring trousers are a new go-to – they are super soft and comfy.

Was there ever a time when the journey was actually better than the destination?

No – and I hope that day never comes!

Who would be your ideal travel companion?

I love travelling with my family – my kids. It’s fun and always exciting, if you forget all the logistics that come with it.

What hotel do you keep returning to, and what makes it special?

I recently discovered Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers in Paris, it’s near the Marais and I love it. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spacious, and the lounge and restaurant are all part of what makes it special for me. I also love the convenience of its location.

What is your favourite place to holiday in summer?

Portugal. The country is so beautiful; the weather during summer is amazing, and the food and wine is great. On top of that, it has amazing beaches. It’s my escape every year – it’s home for me.

What’s your favourite beach in Portugal?

Praia de Galapinhos in Setúbal. It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

What’s in your beach bag?

I always have a book, a magazine and a pair of headphones.

What would you never wear on the beach?

A Speedo.

What’s your favourite holiday drink – and where can you get the best version of it?

On a hot summer day, nothing for me beats a cold Sagres, the Portuguese beer. It’s just refreshing.

And your worst holiday hangover?

I’m not much of a drinker, so I don’t have a story to tell you just yet…

Name your three travel essentials – no matter where you are heading to.

I never miss packing a blazer, a notebook and a pair of my in-flight ‘jetset’ slippers.

What movie has the best holiday style?

For me, it would be Hitchcock’sTo Catch a Thief, starring Cary Grant. The wardrobe in that movie is everything a resort style should be.
