Our latest collection has arrived - made for wherever the season takes you Introducing Resort 2022: an effortless wardrobe, made for wherever the season takes you. In celebration of its arrival, we capture model Hidetatsu Takeuchi in the new collection, sharing his journey from the Japanese countryside to a career which has taken him around the world. Photography: Paul Mclean Styling: Dan May | Words: Jack Moss Our Resort 2022 collection begins where summer left off: menswear instilled with a feeling of ease, elevated by craft and inspired by global travel. We made it for whatever the season mean to you. The pieces themselves are an evolution of the effortlessness at the heart of SMR Days. Shirts and shorts in rich matte silks or bold block-printed cottons can be worn as a set or mixed and matched for simple packing, elegant enough to take you from day to evening. Other styles are new for the resort season – like the Bakoven shirt, with a broad, oversized fit and camp collar, or new fitted Pines shorts – while favourites return in new colours and prints. And, in a continuation of last season, each piece is named for a beach beloved by our founders. Vivid colours are inspired by travel: from rich tones of midnight, aqua and marine blue to warm ivory, sand and almond. Fabrics continue to add texture and depth, this season elevated with new craft techniques, like Indian ari embroidery which runs along slate chambray, or daboo, an ancient printing technique which originated in Rajasthan. Others innovate sustainably: recycled combinations of merino, bamboo and nettle flax are the brand’s most earth-friendly fabrics yet. In celebration of the start of the season and the new campaign, we capture the collection on the shorelines and vistas of the Greek islands, with model Hidetatsu Takeuchi. Alongside, he shares his journey from his home in the Japanese countryside to a career which has taken him around the world – and the J-skincare products you will always find in his suitcase. Tell us a little bit about your background. Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in the Japanese countryside, in a place called Toyama Prefecture. I have been really ambitious and motivated since I was young – I grew up as the eleventh son of a Kimono merchant family – and this background has affected my lifestyle a lot. What was it like to grow up in Toyama? How did being part of a family of kimono merchants shape you? Toyama is one of the least-known places in Japan, I guess. It’s by the sea, but we’re also surrounded by 3000-metre-high mountains. There wasn’t much to do, but the community is really tight. I grew up in a house with a lot of visitors – my dad would take me on trips to learn how to close business deals, and communicate with elders respectfully. My family gave me a lot of traditional knowledge about Japan – to see that there are so many attractions in the country, and so much potential for cultural growth outside of it. I never used to notice that when I was there. What do you miss from home? What are some of your favourite things to do when you’re there? I miss the fresh sushi from my hometown – it’s the best – and my mum’s special menus. I like being outdoors – camping, fishing, and driving. Where is home now? I’ve lived in London since 2019. How did you get started in modelling? I started after I graduated from university – four years of studying literature in Tokyo. I flew to the UK without planning anything, just with a passion to be a successful model. I started knocking door to door of modeling agencies – After I got rejected by nine agencies, then I got scouted by casting director Cicek Michelle Yusuf. Do you have any memorable moments from your career so far – places you’ve visited, shows you’ve walked in, people you’ve worked with? The most memorable moments of my career are always when it’s my first time doing something – my first work was with Selfridges, I was so amazed by the effort of the team to create a single shot. My first runway was Christian Dior by Kim Jones, and I still remember the goosebumps and thrill of the runway like it was yesterday. Modelling has taken you around the world – what is the best place you have visited, and why? The best place I visited was Mykonos, Greece with SMR. It’s an absolutely magical place and I was with an amazing team and people – the best way to end the summer. It was the time of my life. Do you have any memories from the shoot? We came up with these amazing poses and shots without having a moodboard – I felt really involved, the team were taking all my suggestions. It’s what happens when everyone is connected and trusting each other! SMR Days is all about travel. Where’s next on your list? Anywhere would be nice! I’d love to go to the Maldives, Malaysia, Turkey and Marseille, France. I like to take in places in a relaxing, slow way. Where’s one place you haven’t been, but you really want to? Machu Picchu, in Peru. What will we always find packed in your suitcase? Japanese skincare products, and perfume! I recommend Curél by KAO – their products are for sensitive skin – and anything from Shiseido, but most Japanese skincare companies are amazing. Do you have a go-to outfit for travelling? I discovered SMR Days’ drawstring Malibu trousers while on the shoot – they are super comfortable for travelling in. Who is your favourite person to travel with? I would say my brother – I always feel comfortable with him, he is always well organised too. Where do you feel most free? Where do you go to escape? My bathroom! This season is all about ‘Holidays, the SMR way’ – how are you spending the winter break? I haven’t made any plans yet, but I’ve never spent Christmas in London so I would love to see how it is! Or anywhere with snow and winter sports.
